Guy from New Jersey Speaks to Sparse Crowd

The current occupant of the Second Floor, East Wing of the Montana State Capitol was filled with optimism for the state and the nation last night while speaking out of both sides of his mouth.

On Monday night, Mr. Gianforte claimed the state is prospering while insisting Montana is a struggling, crime-ridden, dysfunctional mess.

He blames the current president for everything wrong in Montana but under Gianforte’s own leadership for the last four years, with a supermajority in the legislature to boot, he grew government and raised taxes.

Gianforte said distinctly last night, “The government should remain a servant of its people, not be its master.”

In his next breath, he said the government should dictate to Montana parents what gender their child is, what books their kids can read in school, what they can watch online and what bathrooms they will be permitted to use.

When not engaged in doublespeak, Mr. Gianforte has no trouble simply talking out of his hind end.

To address what he falsely insists is a massive crime wave being fueled by an imperceptible fraction of less than two percent of our population, he suggests a $500 million investment in private prisons and $250 million more to fight crime on the streets. Meanwhile, most of us in Montana leave our doors unlocked and our cars running outside the grocery store when it’s 20 below.

He only includes $6 million to pay corrections officers in his crime-fighting plan.

While rambling incoherently, he insisted that Montana workers needed to gain self-sufficiency and work harder and longer.

He said, “We must encourage work and the dignity that comes with it.”

Unless it’s for corrections officers?

He claims Montana’s wages are growing at the second-fastest rate in the country. This is untrue. He claims more Montanans are working now than when he first took office. They sure are. Many of them work two or three jobs to cover rising property tax, housing and childcare costs.

When Gianforte says “Montanans should keep more of what they earn,” he’s talking about millionaires like himself. The income tax cuts that Gianforte champions give millionaires $10,000 a year while middle class families may only see a couple hundred dollars at best.

This may appeal to a wealthy donor class but let’s be real. He wants his taxes cut and he’s in the position to do it.

He chose to close Monday night with an unprecedented attack on the Montana Supreme Court and our judiciary.

Montanans covet their non-partisan judiciary.

The guy from New Jersey blatantly disagrees with Montana voters. It’s not enough that he won the election, he wants Montana’s highest court bending a knee to him.

Gianforte has every statewide seat. It’s still not enough. He wants to be king, not Governor. Montana’s highest court upholds our Constitution and our state has the best Constitution in the nation.

We are Montanans who care about each other, who care about our Constitution. We pull each other out of the ditch. We work together. We accept and respect one another and we live in harmony with one another.

As a candidate for U.S. Senate, I know it’s the duty of a good leader to govern wisely and leave citizens alone. Montanans need leadership, not a wanna-be monarch like Gianforte.
